I love to cook and have done so for years. Yesterday, I seared the beef roast in a bit of flavored olive oil and then stuck the skillet containing the roast in the oven. Meanwhile I cooked some rice and broccoli and got stuff ready to make gravy from the drippings.

When the roast was finished I grabbed a hot pad and carefully pulled the skillet out of the 375 degree oven and with tongs placed the piping hot roast on a cutting board to rest before slicing. I put the hot skillet on another board while attending to some other chores. Included in those chores was putting the hot pad back on its hook.

I decided it was time to make the gravy and, with bare hands, grabbed the handle of the skillet in order to put it back on the stove top. It is really cool at times like this to be married to a wound care nurse specialist. She said, "Put ice on it. It won't keep it from blistering, but it will probably feel better."

Which reminds me of an old Mark Twain quote,

"A cat, having sat on a hot stove lid, will not do so again. Of course, he will not sit on a cold stove lid, either"

This morning you can hardly tell I was wounded except that the right hand is still pretty sore and two fingertips have blisters that broke. At least I can still type and we discovered that my kid, Derek, can make pretty good gravy. He made wise use of hot pads while stirring the gravy.

Yeah, so... too soon old, too late smart.

Rod
